An-My Le : Small Wars
An-My Le
Aperture Foundation, Inc.
$40.00

In one of An-My Lan-My Lê's photographs of American Marines training for Iraq in the Mojave desert, a group of barrels is marked with the phrase "Do Not Shoot." Obviously, the photographer didn't heed this warning, and the result is the most recent, timely series in of images in this compelling first monograph. Earlier photographs document a group of Vietnam War re-enactors in South Carolina who, like their better-known Civil War counterparts, restage battles, training, and the daily life of soldiers. An-My Lê is part of a new crop of artists who merge documentary and landscape photography to explore history and current events with an emotional subtext and from a very personal point of view.

Bernd & Hilla Becher : Framework Houses
Bernd & Hilla Becher
MIT Press
$78.00

Sixty miles outside of Cologne, the residential architecture of the Siegen industrial region has been constructed with minimal ornamentation in accordance with stringent rules concerning the use of timber in framing. In this series of photographs ordered by sides, views, and landscapes, these structures were carefully documented by the Bechers from the 1960s onwards. Includes 350 plates.

Bernd & Hilla Becher : Water Towers
Bernd and Hilla Becher
MIT Press
$78.00

The Bechers' 224 photographs of watertowers comprise a unique, single minded, even obsessive mission. They were taken from as many as 8 angles, over a period of 25 years, with a stylistic approach so consistent that photographs juxtaposed from the 1950s and 1980s suggest a minute to minute account deadpan portraits of unadorned metal, concrete, and wooden structures.
